Have you ever tried skiing in September?
The Hintertux Glacier is Austria’s only year-round ski resort. This isn’t just a marketing claim, but a matter of altitude: the slopes reach up to 3,250m – high enough for the snow to remain even when other glaciers have long since closed for the season.
On 25/09/2026 and 26/09/2026, Hintertux will celebrate the “Oktoberfest” with live music, a farmers’ market, and the cattle drive down from the Bichlalm hut – one of the most beautiful in Tyrol. A week later, from 02/10/2026 to 04/10/2026, the freestyle scene will gather for the season kick-off at Betterpark Hintertux, one of Europe’s highest-altitude snow parks. In between, you’ll find freshly groomed slopes, hardly any queues, and plenty of space.
Those who are already up there in autumn
It’s no coincidence that national ski teams from all over the world set up their training camps on the Hintertux Glacier in late summer and autumn. The snow quality here in the early morning is unlike anywhere else at this time of year. You can follow the pros’ tip easily: catch the first gondola early; the best runs are before 10 a.m. Afterwards, enjoy the sun terrace, the views, and a coffee.
Skiing in the morning, hiking boots in the afternoon
This is precisely where the real appeal lies. Where else can you squeeze a day’s skiing and a day’s hiking into the same 24h? After a morning’s skiing, the valley awaits below with Alpine trails, the Tuxbach stream, and the last warm sunshine of the year. If you'd rather stay below the surface, the Nature's Ice Palace takes you about 30m beneath the slope to ice crystals, frozen waterfalls, and a boat trip on the glacial lake. The Spannagel Cave is the only marble cave in the Central Alps – both are accessible all year round with a guided tour.
The Adler Inn as your base camp
It’s a four-minute ride on the Adler Inn shuttle to the valley station; you can pick up your ski pass straight from reception, and the heated ski lockers are already waiting for you. In the evening, enjoy Anni Stock’s cuisine: homemade specialities, regional dishes – and still with that image from the morning fresh in your mind, when the glacier was bathed in the first light of day, whilst late summer still reigned in the valley.
